How to Calm Fight or Flight Response Using Compression

If you are reading this blog post, I’m sure that you are interested in a tip or two on how you can take better care of yourself and your emotions.

We worked with Somatic Coach Maggie Hayes last month to learn how to calm Fight or Flight responses. So what is Fight or Flight? Fight or Flight response is likely to occur in highly stressful situations. Your pulse races, your breathing speeds up, your pupils dilate — all in response to a perceived danger.

We experience anxiety when we overthink and worry about negative outcomes that might occur (or might not even happen) in the future. Anxiety spins our brains out. That's why we can't think our way out of anxiety. Instead, we should begin with the body.

Through our partnership with Maggie, we’ve discovered that using compression tools such as the ARDO Weighted Blanket can really calm your Fight or Flight response.

“When I wake up in the mornings and have a million things ahead of me, my energy starts to rise, I can feel myself get tense and anxious, and I know I need to bring myself back down. So I use the ARDO Weighted Blanket for targeted compression on the trigger points where I always feel those anxious sensations build. I feel the pressure of the blanket, I breathe, and I tell my body it’s safe.” says Maggie.

The weight releases stress-related physical effects and therefore stimulates greater blood flow, letting the heart rela. Meanwhile, the Nervous System enters parasympathetic, rest and repair mode.

As a result, this blanket pressure can be soothing amidst the activated energy of a Fight or Flight response, while also grounding you and helping you relax. A relaxed environment can allow you to just breathe.

Maggie uses the weighted blanket for herself in the early morning when she can place it on the trigger points, during meditation just draped over her shoulders, or — if she has a particularly activating week — she’ll sleep with it over her body.

The ARDO Weighted Blanket is made of 100% rayon derived from sustainable bamboo, a unique fabric that promotes airflow to remove heat from the body, and regulates your body temperature. Soft and breathable, it has the right amount of pressure without being overpowering.

Maggie prides herself on simply being in her body every single day as her #1 priority. Feeling grounded, stable, soft, and open. As she starts her day, she intentionally integrates tools that bring it through.
